Are You a Democrat, Republican, or a Christian First?

June 2, 2012 By R. Brad White 7 Comments

We’re heading into a political season where partisan politics, heated discussions, and passionate opinions are the norm. As Christians, we are known for being too political…using our majority power to influence or even dictate the results of the election. And to some extent this is true. When we get out the Christian vote, we are a strong influence in American politics. That political power has declined in recent years, but it is still very potent.

Negative Stereotype: Christians are Too Political

The negative stereotype of being too political, and the disgruntled reaction to it by non-Christians, is based on misuse of our political power. Outsiders believe that we use our Christian beliefs within the political and legal systems to create and sustain laws that impose our beliefs on others. They claim that we apply our morals to their lives. They claim we restrict their rights based on our beliefs. All one has to do is look at the debate over gay marriage rights to justify that claim. It’s true. [Read more…]

Quiz Results

Changing the Face of Christianity Inc has released the results of a Christianity Quiz; an anonymous self-assessment scoring how well Christians live the teachings of Jesus Christ. E.g. The quiz answers the question: “How Christian Are You?”

Answer 10 multiple-choice questions and the quiz returns a score, indicating how well the person lives up to the Christian ideal as modeled by Jesus Christ. The results indicate if you are “Far from Christ”, a “Worldly Christian”, a “Good Christian”, or a “Spiritually Mature Christian”.

Over an 8 month period, from September 2011 through April 2012, Changing the Face of Christianity collected over 1,500 responses to their Christianity Quiz.

Here is a summary of the results: [Read more…]

Where Are the Christmas and Easter Christians?

April 16, 2012 By R. Brad White 7 Comments

It was an amazing Easter church service last week. Tons of people showed up. It reminded me of the Christmas service. It reminded me how each year a significant portion of the body of Christ shows up for Christmas and Easter services to enjoy Christian fellowship, and praise and worship the Creator and Savior of the world…Jesus Christ. It also reminded me that the rest of the year these “Christians” will be gone without a trace.

A couple questions are racing through my head.

  • Why do they show up at all?
  • Why don’t they show up each week the rest of the year
  • What other parts of their Christian life have a momentary blip of activity, followed by an overwhelming almost deafening stream of silence
  • Can you call yourself a Christian if you don’t participate in the ongoing and communal worship of God?

Great Works!

March 26, 2012 By KarenSmith 2 Comments

Recently, I was sitting in a pew at my church pondering my life versus God’s amazing power. I sat there and as I thought about how great my God is, I started to list all the amazing blessings and opportunities He has given me.

Missed Opportunities?

Many times I had chosen to take the quicker road of “getting the job done” so I could pursue a more selfish desire like watching a TV program.

I thought about all the avenues that He has given me to serve Him: Missions, coaching, volunteering with our Youth Group, participating in our Community Group, Girl Scouts… the list could go on and on. I was not proud of any of the things I was doing.  I knew that with all of them I had missed opportunities to do better, encourage more and point people to Jesus. Many times I had chosen to take the quicker road of “getting the job done” so I could pursue a more selfish desire like watching a TV program. I began to feel smaller and smaller, selfish, guilty, and sad. I was starting to feel really horrible until IT happened!

God is Gracious

A gentleman in my church was giving His testimony on how he came to know his mission for God in his life. He knew years ago that God had a mission for him but it was only revealed to him during this past spring. In the spring he was invited to volunteer at a church that has the purpose of feeding the minds, bodies, and souls of the homeless community in downtown Dallas. Since then God has used this man to create an amazing partnership between our church and this downtown Dallas church! Wow!

Here is the kicker: He volunteered because some friends of mine invited him. Guess who invited those friends? Well, I did! My God is so gracious.

God is Faithful

It hit me like a sweet load of guilt-saving bricks. God knows exactly how He is going to use me!

It hit me like a sweet load of guilt-saving bricks. God knows exactly how He is going to use me! If I wake up in the morning and say to God, “Well, God how can I be of service to you today” or even “God, help me serve you today” then I have it all wrong. It is not about me! I should not take any pride in the ways that God is using me or even worry about if He is using me. God is faithful! He is using me just as I am.

I had no idea that God was using me when I invited my friends to go to that downtown Dallas church, and He was! In Ephesians 2:8-10 is says “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.  For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do”

God Knows All

Now it is my resolution not to worry about how God is using me, or even how I can be used by God. Instead, I plan to get to know the Savior of the world better – so I can hear His voice throughout my day and know His heartbeat for me and my family.

Now, how is God going to use this? I will leave that up to Him. I now really understand it is not “Karen knows best” but “God knows all.”

R. Brad White Predicts Return of Jesus Christ – Save the Date

January 12, 2012 By R. Brad White 8 Comments

With the increasing popularity (and disdain) of “Jesus is coming on x date”, I thought I would join the ranks of those with a Jesus second coming prediction.  I hope you aren’t disappointed.  But before I give the date, let me build up some suspense. [Read more…]
