I would retire from my telecommunications job and open a transitional home for men and women. This home would help individuals get back on there feet by ministering to thier physical , mental, emotional, psychological, social and educational needs…
About seven years ago I did leave my nearly three decade career as a financial expert to enter the Christian ministry full time. I first started down this road by becoming the Vice President of Finance of a then 100 year old large Christian non profit. Doing what the first respondent to this question would like to do – we had 900+ beds for the homeless – with both rescue and transitional living facilities. This ministry of mine lasted for three years while I helped lead them through the financial downturn of 2008… Then about four years ago I left there to research and write full time. My first book “Unrolling the Scroll: Revealing the Mysteries of the Revelation of Jesus Christ” should be published later on in 2014. The distinctives of my book include: the most literal interpretation of Revelation ever published; many parts of Revelation are solidly connected back to every major end of the age prophetic passages of scripture elsewhere in the Bible; the strategies of Satan in trying to deceive the world during the end of the age are very likely revealed and the book itself is written in very simple language (at the 8th grade level) – so that it can be more easily shared with people in an evangelistic way. Looking forward to the other responses to this most interesting question!
In 2004 I left a very successful career in financial services and on staff as the full-time Pastor of Spiritual Formation & Ministry Development at a local church. We quickly realized that it’s way more expensive to live than we had imagined. We couldn’t survive on the church salary and were drawing down savings & liquidating investments at an alarming pace. After more than two years, I received God’s permission to resign and go back to the professional world. I took a corporate job serving Christian non-profits, and went on on staff as the part-time Recovery Pastor at a local mega-church. After two more years, the Lord directed me to resign and focus on a ministry tha trains pastors in Africa. I’ve been involved (and currently lead) that ministry every since. However … the ministry cannot afford to pay me a salary sufficient to support my family. So I work full-time as a professional in financial services — and that funds my ministry endeavors. While I’m at peace with it now, it was quite disappointing to realize that Christian ministry is often so poorly funded that professionals cannot be paid a market salary … and often cannot be paid enough to support their families. So those who are employed in Christian ministry (at churches or para-church organizations) often end up being those who have spouses that can support them, have retirement income, or have no families to support.
