Offer Your Bodies as a Living Sacrifice…Really!

September 5, 2015 By R. Brad White 1 Comment

Are you offering your life as a living sacrifice to God and others?

Romans 12:1 (NIV) 1 “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God–this is your true and proper worship.”

It’s way too easy to be self-focused. But that’s not God’s calling in our lives. We are called to offer our bodies as a LIVING SACRIFICE. As an act or expression of WORSHIP to the God we owe our eternal lives to, we are to offer ALL of ourselves to loving God, serving God, loving others, and serving others.

How does your life reflect this teaching?

How does your life reflect this teaching? My confession is that I fail at that over and over. I can do it when It’s on my radar…but getting it on the radar and keeping it there is the challenge.

So, consider this an invitation to put on your radar this teaching: to offer your lives as a sacrifice to God and others, instead of being self-focused.

Some Questions to Ponder and Discuss:

  • What strategies do you use to keep God and his teachings on your radar?
  • What are some ways you can live for God and others?
  • What’s one small thing you can do when you notice you are being too self-focused?

Feel free to discuss using the comments.

Put the Bible into Practice

August 19, 2014 By R. Brad White Leave a Comment

It’s important to not just read the Bible. We must put it into practice in our daily lives.

In Philippians 4:9, the apostle Paul urges us “whatever you have learned or receive or heard from me, or seen in me, put into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.”

Here is an example. A few verses beforehand, in Philippians 4:6, Paul teaches us “Do not be anxious about anything…”. In this chapter he’s also talking about living with the joys Christ in our lives and being content with the ups and downs of life.

Do you want to remain anxious or stressed out about things or do you want the peace of God to be with you?

Like Paul, I urge you to exchange the anxiety and discontented feelings of this life with the peace that comes from God alone.

Do You Know Jesus?

July 31, 2013 By R. Brad White 1 Comment

do-you-know-himDo you really know Jesus? Let’s see about that…

1 John 2:3-6 NIV

“We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.”

Humility and Lone-Ranger Christians

February 27, 2013 By R. Brad White 28 Comments

Young woman reading bible

I’m reading Romans and am continually blown away by it. What an amazing book. I’ve read Romans before, but something is clearer this time. Its teachings are profound and challenging, and so relevant to all believers.

Romans 12:3-8 is important as we consider how Christians should engage in fellowship with one another and serve one another.

 Let’s hear from Romans 12:3-8,

“For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.”

Verse 3:

“Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought” is about being humble, but it’s not just about being humble. In context with the rest of the passage, this verse is saying: look you are a part of a bigger whole called the body of Christ.

Together, when we are doing the work of our Lord to love and serve one another, we can do amazing things.

We are all gifted to support the body in our own unique ways. We should not think of ourselves as any better than another because alone we are worthless. Together, when we are doing the work of our Lord to love and serve one another, we can do amazing things.

Verse 5 is equally profound:

“so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others”. We BELONG to one another. This suggests an interdependent relationship where we are to both give and receive from the body of Christ; one another.

Some people think it’s ok to be a lone-ranger Christian; a Christian who avoids fellowship with other believers or avoids going to church and being a part of a local body of believers. Many reasons are expressed, but the reality is that the body of Christ is weaker when Christians live in isolation.

Lone-Ranger Christian

The lone-ranger Christian is weaker because he/she doesn’t have the support of fellow believers, and the body of Christ is weaker because we can’t receive what you have to offer. Lone-ranger Christians don’t serve the body, and also prevent fellow believers the opportunity to serve them.

The rest of the passage is simple. Use your gifts to serve the body. Go to church (and fellowship with other believers) not solely based on what you receive, but for what you are uniquely gifted to give. If you are an encourager, and you don’t encourage the body, then there is a disease within the church. If you are a teacher and you don’t teach, there is a disease within the church.

The cure for the disease is to engage in fellowship and service within a local body of believers (aka “the church”). Pour out your life in humble, loving service to one another.

The Bible IS Inerrant and Other Thoughts About the Bible

June 22, 2012 By Brad 9 Comments

Recently this site published an article by Daniel Scholl where he said he “does not believe in the inerrancy of the Bible.”  To say that readers reacted to this article would be an understatement.  Many had strong reactions and voiced their views either as public comments on this site or as direct e-mails to the ministry.  The overwhelming majority of views expressed were not in support of Daniel’s position.
